Made In China: Hummer

FILE - In this June 2, 2009 file photo, a Hummer H2 vehicle is seen for sale at a GM Superstore in Dublin, Calif. A person briefed on the matter on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009 said General Motors Co. is expected to sign a deal to sell its Hummer brand to a Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer as early as Thursday afternoon. Today is the day all Hummer owners can cringe and all other car owners can sigh with relief as they look at their affordable yet reliable Mazda. As I was admiring the structure and overall awesomeness of a Hummer after school, I thought to myself, when I’m older I’m going to own one of those, indefinitely; but not anymore! Not only will the well-known luxury vehicle brand soon join the hundreds of Wal-Mart products on the shelves, the name of the brand could even soon be levelled with a Suzuki!

Earlier this morning, a US$150 million deal was sealed between America’s General Motors Co. with China’s Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. - a billion dollar deal to the Chinese, and probably a bargain when the world's economy begins to pick up and people begins to trust themselves to spend!

However, although the company promises the manufacturing of the SUVs, Trucks and SUTs will remain in America, I beg to differ as the company will soon aim to save thousands and maybe millions in the future; hence the title of this blog. So what can we do about this? Will Americans lose their jobs to yet another Asian country that takes advantage of its workers as they are seemingly replaceable?

The answer is obvious (I could be wrong), but I guess we’ll just have to wait. Sooner or later we could be expecting huge sales/bargains on another luxury brand! Who knows?! There might be cheap Hummer knock-offs sold on the world-wide-web, but, I think I’ll stick to the good old dependable Japanese cars thank you very much!

On the plus side though, China is aiming to make the huge road runner more environmentally friendly. I commend them for that as it is a task that seems impossible and I wouldn’t be hesitant to congratulate them when I do see an electric or hybrid Hummer on the road.

So what is your thought about this? Feel free to comment!
